William J. Alemañy Méndez

Experience in the Appellate Process with extraordinary results

Mr. Alemañy has been involved in all phases of bankruptcy proceedings, including the assessment of the action to follow prior to the filing of the bankruptcy case, analysis and preparation of bankruptcy petition, Schedules and Financial Affairs and Meetings of Creditors. His broad experience in the restructuration process of the Debtor, always assist the clients in reaching the fresh start they sought. His litigation skills pertaining to lift of stay, violations to automatic stay, objections to treatment of claims, objection to claimed exemptions, and adversary proceedings in general make him a well-rounded young practitioner. His has great experience, direct and indirect, in the Appellate Process before the District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel and the First Circuit, which has been essencial for the Law Firm to establish new case law, including a vanguardist interpretation of “state law” legislation related to bankruptcy matters. He has actively participated in mediation process where The Law Firm represents defendants in various multimillion dollar avoidance actions under PROMESA , which concluded in a significant reduction of claims, in some cases with no economic exposure at all.

Mr. Alemañy graduated from Bentley University in 2011 and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. He also obtained a Master of Science in Federal Taxation from the same institution in 2012. In 2015 he obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. Prior to becoming a member of the Firm, he was an intern for Hon. Enrique S. Lamoutte, at the United State Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
Mr. Alemañy is admitted to practice in the following courts: Puerto Rico State Courts, United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the United States Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the First Circuit. His tenure as intern law clerk for a bankruptcy judge provided him the tools for great redaction and interpretation of the bankruptcy law. Mr. Alemañy has also been involved in the Title III and Title VI proceedings under the provisions of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act, 48 U.S.C. § 2101, et. seq., (PROMESA), specifically defending millionaire avoidance actions with great success.
